One of the fun things about being a SPEA student is getting a media report each month with a list of articles written by or including research or comments by SPEA or Center on Philanthropy professors and researchers. It's always an interesting list and it's a good way to identify interesting professors who share similar interests (for example, I REALLY want to take a class taught by Shelia Kennedy or Les Lenkowsky).
One article Les Lenkowsky contributed to caught my attention. It appeared on Bloomberg.com entitled Getting Your Name on a Building Gets Cheaper as Nonprofits Compete. As the Cultural Foundation works to complete our Art Center, we have been talking about naming rights. This article states that the cost of naming a building is typically 50% of the cost. The article discusses projects over 1 million dollars. For smaller projects like our Art Center, 50% really opens up the field to a big percentage of the population in Montgomery County. While I am not a big fan of naming different parts of a building (for example, the atrium, bathroom, kitchen, etc.), I believe this kind of fundraising with naming rights for an entire building is a good idea.
